FAQ

If you have a question about TurtleSeg that is not answered on this page, please contact us.

Q: How do I select and edit a contour I had previously created?

A: In general, you will not be able to scroll one of the slice windows on to an existing contour in order to edit it. In order to re-edit the contour, you must select it first, by left clicking on it in the 3D view, or its corresponding Turtle Map line segment in a slice view. Once selected, you can align a slice view to it by double clicking on it. The selected contour will then be shown in a slice view, where you can now edit its seedpoints.

Q: I have created many parallel contours, yet the resulting 3D segmentation is still poor. What's going on?

A: The segmentation algorithm works best when you provide it with non-parallel contours. TurtleSeg requires that the contours you add are representitive of the underlying shape along at least 2 planes. Try using Spotlight, our plane suggestion feature, by selecting "Suggest plane" under the "Actions" menu.

Q: I can't select more than one image to load, so how can I load a full DICOM series?

A: You can load a full DICOM image set by selecting a single image file belonging to the set. TurtleSeg will find and load the other images.

Q: Where is the centre of rotation in the 3D view?

A: In the 3D view, the centre of rotation is always in front of you. When you pan the camera, the centre of rotation moves with it. Zooming or orbiting the view will not change the centre of rotation. If you wish to move the centre of rotation on to an object of interest, repeat the following actions until the object is the centre of rotation: 1) Centre the view on the object by panning. 2) Rotate the view slightly.

Q: Why is the ALT key not working?

A: When using VMware, we have noticed that the ALT key can be unresponsive. If you are using VMware and having this problem, please try running the application on a native operating system.

Q: How do I edit generated contours?

A: It is possible to manually modify generated contours, though it is discouraged. In order to manually modify a generated contour, one should first orient a slice view with the selected contour by double clicking on it in the 3D view. Once a slice view is aligned with the generated contour (the view should be flashing), you can either 1) override the generated contour by contouring the object of interest in that view as usual, or 2) edit the generated contour by choosing "Auto-contour selected plane" from the action menu (or press CTRL+A), then click the contour and start editing it.

Q: Norton Antivirus gives the warning "WS.Reputation.1" when I install TurtleSeg. How come?

A: The "WS.Reputation.1" warning is triggered for software with "low reputation", according to Norton. Since TurtleSeg is brand new software, it has not had any time to build its reputation with Norton, and hence the warning.

Q: Which OS does TurtleSeg run on? Is there a Mac or Linux version?

A: Currently we provide Windows 32 and 64 bit versions of TurtleSeg. Creating Mac and Linux ports is on our to-do list. Since we plan to gauge the community's feedback before we prioritize our next steps, if a specific OS is important to you, please contact us. We tested TurtleSeg on Mac under VMWare and it works without problems. See also Parallels.

Q: Does TurtleSeg allow the extraction of segmentation features (e.g. volume)?

A: The current focus of TurtleSeg is interactive segmentation, so little post-segmentation functionality is available. However, by exporting your segmentation, it can be opened in other software for subsequent analysis. We are always interested in improving TurtleSeg, so if you are interested in particular measurement that you like to see built in to TurtleSeg, please tell us about it.
